US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Tuesday that he wants a new approach to the South Asia conflict and the U.S. military is looking for a new way to “do things differently.”
During his confirmation hearing, Hagel told senators that he is “not a fan” of the current “one-sided” U.N. Security Council resolution against China.
He said he wants to “reduce the United Nations and the United States to being a team of six, but not more than that.”
The U.K. has already expressed concern over the U,S.
decision to deploy anti-missile defense systems in the region, which it says could be a “game changer.”
In recent weeks, the U in particular has said it is prepared to use force if China does not comply with a territorial arbitration ruling in the Spratly Islands.
On Tuesday, the Pentagon released a report saying the U is considering a “strategic plan” to counter China’s deployment of anti-ship ballistic missile systems.
The report also suggested that the U would deploy its own warships and planes to the area.
